Book Review: SM101

Tabutoys, an amazing adult toy store, was nice enough to send me a copy of SM101 to review for them. Since it’s known as one of the BDSM classics, I was actually quite excited about this opportunity to be able to let others know if it lives up to that reputation.

I must say that this book is definitely one that you want to pick up if you’re looking to learn more about technique. However, I probably wouldn’t say it’s a good choice for anyone who is looking to learn about the mental and mind play aspect of BDSM – this book is purely about the physical play part of it all.

Author Jay Wiseman starts off by talking about his experience in BDSM and how he managed to become as involved as he is today. (His name is one almost all serious BDSMers know.) Next begins the chapter on the “Basics”. He covers safewords, safe calls, and what negotiations should be done before every scene. (This is actually one of the best parts of the book – the negotiations section includes pages that he encourages you to photocopy and go through before going into play with a new partner)

The next chapter is all about the different ways to find partners. It’s a good chapter, but I must say that it’s a little out of date. Most of the BDSM world is now conducted online while he still mentions that you should use magazine ads. There’s useful information in this chapter, but I would remember that modern technology now makes the internet one of the best places to go to find new partners.

The next chapter, Bondage 1A, includes information about selecting your rope, learning how to use your rope, safety information and things you should have safety-wise, and basic ties for tying up your partner. The basic ties are quite nicely explained, and there are some diagrams that make it a lot easier to learn. However, if your sole purpose is to learn how to do new ties, I would recommend a different book than this one. If you’re interested in rope and what you could all do with it, this is a good choice.

Bondage 1B, the next chapter, covers a lot of different things about sensory deprivation. (Gags, blindfolds, etc.) It covers the best uses, the best materials to pick, and safety concerns about using them. There is also a great section in here about handcuffs and the danger of using them in a BDSM setting. It’s the most thorough section I’ve ever seen about it, and it’s definitely someone interested in BDSM should look into. This chapter also talks about some of the other materials you could use for bondage (tape, chain) and their advantages and disadvantages.

An example of the inside of the book. Note the little "Quotation" on the right side of the page.

Giving and Receiving Erotic Pain is the next chapter. It doesn’t include too much for the advanced user but does include good starting points and techniques for doing your first scene and learning how much pain you can take.

Flagellation is a good section. It’s great for those interested in the Dominant side of things. It speaks about the safe zones that you can hit and the zones you should never touch. It also talks about (with pictuers) the different impact toys and what their purposes and differences are.

The next chapter is all about Clamps. It talks about the different types of clamps and how you should use your clamps safely. It talks about what time limits should be placed on wearing clamps along with different fun places that you could place the clamps on your partner.

The next chapter is about Lubricants. Even if you’re not into BDSM but do enjoy sex toys, this is a great chapter for anyone to read. It goes indepth about what ingrediants make lubricant good to use and what ones should be avoided. It’s actually the most thought-out lubricant section I’ve ever seen.

The next chapter is about “Erotic Torture”. It includes things like hot and cold play (wax and ice, respectively). It also talks about things not so common like “methol” play and hair blowers as BDSM toys. There’s a small section about traditional sex toys, but he recommends you pick up his other book “Sex Toy Tricks” if you’re more interested in that. Wiseman also goes on to speak about the different types of sensation like play piercing, abrasion, electric play, and knife play. He talks about the advantages, disadvantages, and safety concerns for each. There’s also a fun little section on masturbation games.

There’s a small section on Humiliation for the next chapter. Nothing too extreme, but it covers the basics.

Next there’s a pretty big chapter on “Dominant/Submissive” interactions. He first outlines what’s usually expected out of a Dominant and a submissive. There’s quite a few pages on the “Four Duties of a submissive”. There’s also a good section about position training. If you’re interested in only the Dominant/submissive aspect of it, I suggest a different book. This touches on the basics for someone who is curious about it, but doesn’t do anything too much more advanced than that. After the D/s chapter, there’s a smaller chapter on Master/slave relationships. Nothing too impressive there, but it does outline the basic differences between D/s and M/s.

A DVD in front of the SM101 book to show size. Bonus points if you know what kink-related DVD it is.

One of the best chapters out of this book is this chapter – “SM Organizations”. For someone interested in getting involved with the community, this chapter gives you the basic know-how on finding one. There’s also great sections about how to run your own SM organization along with tips on organizing a play party.

The “General Safety Concerns” is just that – general safety concerns. However, someone it does include is about SM when the female is pregnant. It also talks about the basic objects for safety that you should keep around. After this, there’s also a section on “Safer Sex” as well.

The next chapter is a small chapter on suggestions on how a female dominating a man, but then it goes into the basic things that you should put in a basic BDSM kit. It includes tips on buying the “formal” BDSM toys as well.

The last chapter is about related practices like Age Play and gives information about where to learn more about those practices.

One of the nice things about this book is the fact that he includes quotations from other people involved in BDSM. It definitely adds new flavor to the book and makes it a little more interesting. (Reading about the bare basics for 400 pages can get a little monotanous.) He’s also quite laid-back in speaking about all the different aspects of BDSM and doesn’t talk down to the reader. That having been said, this book is 390 pages with 28 chapters. I’m a fast reader, and this book took me around eight hours to read from front to back. It, however, is also a great book to keep for referencing in the future. (For questions like “What makes a paddle different than a flogger?” or “What are some basic knots I can use to tie up my lover?”)

Maybe it’s just the college student in me, but I expected this book to be college-textbook sized. It’s actually not. It’s only slightly bigger than your average DVD case. It also has a picture of a hand holding the base of a riding crop with “SM101″ in large letters in the front, so it’s probably not something you want to read in public. I, however, was reading this at my university in between my finals, and no one noticed because I kept the book flat on the table, and the back-side of the book (with the description of the contents) doesn’t include anything overtly “kinky” to a passerby.

I’d definitely recommend this book to someone who knows they want to do something with kink but doesn’t know anything about where to start. It’s a great source all in one place, and I know I’m going to be referencing it for new players. It’s a great cover-all for all the basics of BDSM play. However, if you know an exact thing that you’re interested in, it’s probably best to seek out a book solely on that, because this book covers the basics of everything – but nothing in depth.

An amazing book all-in-all and one that anyone interested in BDSM should own. Tabutoys carries SM 101 at their website. They also have a great selection of other BDSM toys and other sex books that are always growing. I must say that I’m also amazed by Tabutoy’s customer service. If they don’t have a toy you want, you just have to ask, and they will give you all the options they have of that specific toy. It’s amazing service.

Finer points of Impact Play

I’ve heard so many people say that they feel like they’re an expect in impact play just by doing it a couple times. No one ever says that about rope bondage. Yet they take about the same amount of practice to actually master.

I’ve watched a guy in our local community do rope work. It’s absolutely beautiful, and he’s definitely a pro at it. I’ve listened to him talk about how he’s gotten so good at it, and honestly, it’s a pretty breath-taking story as well.

But you just never hear anyone ask the guy flogging how he got so good. It’s kinda sad really. Everyone assumes that impact play is just so amazingly easy to master. It can actually be a problem as well when you get some novice guy who shows up at a party thinking he can wield floggers because it’s so “easy”. Many people know nothing about danger zones or about reading the bottom.

I’d have to say that the first time I watched a real expert play was when he was playing with my submissive. Now, it may have been because of his wider selection of toys, but he definitely pushed my submissive so much farther than I ever had. It was amazing to watch how well he could read him. He’d push him as far as he could with one toy, then switch to another to let him recover. I learned quite a lot of things from him that day – just watching. I’m just hoping that, one day, I can be as amazing as he is with what he does.

It’s just sad that we don’t appreciate those skilled in impact play as we do those in other play like fire, knife, wax, and needle play. I think we should all try to remember that picking up a flogger and using it properly does require lots of time and effort. Probably lots of hours of striking a pillow to learn aim, then research learning where the proper zones are, then finally learning how to read your submissive. It does take quite a bit of work, and it’s unfortunate that it’s unappreciated sometimes.

Leather Vampire Gloves Review

Well, I ended up winning a really amazing prize from Naughty Eliot’s contest – Vampire Gloves from Eden’s Fantasy – an adult toy store! I had wanted a pair ever since I saw one at a play party, so it was a really happy win.

They did take awhile to ship, but that is most likely attributed to it being a contest winning. When they got here in their unmarked box, I was pleased to see that they were just sitting in the box with some plastic to keep it from moving too much. Unlike some leather products, there was also virtually no leather smell to the gloves either. I was a little disappointed to see some brown discolouration on one of the fingers of the glove, but it came off easily with some warm water.

The gloves are soft on the outside, but I was actually even more surprised when I slipped my hands into them. The inside of the gloves is very, very soft. It’s just the inside of the leather, but I’d never felt genuine, nicely treated leather before. It’s quite a pleasant sensation, and because of it, it’s actually quite hard to make your hands sweaty while inside of these gloves.

Just a picture to show you the gap between my wrist and the glove.

All of the stiching around the gloves is in great condition and appears like it will hold up to stress quite well. The gloves is quite flexible as well – I can almost ball my hands into fists while wearing it. However, I wouldn’t recommend doing that too often as I would imagine it’s not good for the tacks nor the stitching because the gloves were meant to be firm. At the bottom (near the part where you insert your hand into it) of the glove, there’s a button that can be fastened (quite easily) once your hand is already inside of the glove to keep it from slipping off. When I worked fast food, I wore the “Large” size gloves, and this pair of Large Vampire Gloves, actually left some room inside the glove near my wrist for me, so I’d say that they run slightly larger than size, but nowhere near the point where it would ever slide off. This could be attributed to the fact that I am female and have slightly smaller wrists than most males (their target audience, I would assume, with this product.)

As for the fun part – the actual spikes. When your hands are in the gloves, you can’t feel each individual spike. It appears that they put tacks into the glove then put another material inside the glove to help holder the tacks in place and keep the wearer from feeling uncomfortable with them. Some of the tacks were slightly bent when I received these gloves, but it’s not noticable in the slightest while using them. Doing a general count, there are twenty spikes on each finger (including the thumb) making for a total of one-hundred per glove. I’ve used these gloves quite a few times (mostly for nightly spankings), and they hold up quite well to mostly anything you give them. I’m pretty rough with them, and not a single spike has broken nor (from what I can tell) become bent.

Detailed picture of the spikes on the gloves

As for how this feels – My boyfriend says it’s quite scratchy if you apply pressure while dragging them on him. If you want to lightly run the gloves over your partner, it will just be an interesting sensation. If you choose to use them for impact, as long as you’re moderately light, you can easily use these for spanking someone. It would protect your hands from hurting, and it takes quite a bit of the effort out of spanking. It also provides a unique sensation for the person receiving the spanking. As long as you do it light, you will not draw blood with these gloves. If you’re a sadist, however, these gloves would have the ability to draw blood if you’re really rough with them.

As for most couples, I’d say the best use out of these gloves would be for sensation. It’s great to blindfold your partner and gently glide these gloves over your partners skin. You can easily use just one finger along her/his spine for a great teasing sensation. However, if your partner doesn’t enjoy pain, I would not recommend spanking or any impact. When you first receive the gloves, however, make sure to try them on yourself so you know what’s a good amount of pressure to apply.

Lastly, these gloves are made out of genuine sheep-skin leather, so clean-up is pretty easy. (Honestly, unless you drew blood or plan on using these on a different partner, there’s really rarely any reason to clean it.) I would recommend you gently dampen a wash cloth with warm water and squeeze off the excess before cleaning the body of the glove. I would recommend a antibacterial disinfectant wipe to generally wipe down each of the individual spikes. I also recommend keeping these away from any bodily fluid or lube. I think both of those would easily be able to get into the seams of the gloves and be impossible to clean out. I think this goes without saying, but I’d say these are definitely something you should keep away from the genitals and never, ever use for insertion.

All-in-all, great gloves with great opportunities for use in the future. (Also one of my favorite toys for bedtime spankings.) They appear to be well-made, and I expect them to be holding up quite well in the future as well. You can get your own pair of vampire gloves from this really great sex toy shop.

Book Review: Fetish

Took it myself. Isn't it a pretty book?

This is the first sexual book I ever actually bought, and I must say that it was because of the cover. While the name of the book just jumps out at you, the texture of the book is actually one of the most unique things about it. It’s made out of a very light rubber (and honestly probably the reason why the book costs so much). However, it’s definitely one of my favorite books to show off just the sole reason of the cover. I suck at judging weight, but I would say this book is probably about two pounds and it’s just the length of my hand and barely half an inch thick.

The back of the book does include a explanation of the book, but it’s only a sticker. This disappointed me because the book is made out of rubber. Rubber tends to bend. And thus, my sticker on the back now has creases in it that make it look more well-worn than it really is. However, even knowing that in advance, I wouldn’t have let that small factor deter me from purchasing the book.

It really is a short book. I don’t think it was meant to be long. About a third of the book literally is just pictures. However, they’re beautiful fetish pictures, so I can’t say that I minded that much. I’d say that most would finish reading it under an hour.

I’d definitely call this book a conversation starter. If you and your partner are looking for some new kinky ideas to try, this is the book to purchase. I’d also recommend this for anyone more interested in some of the fetishes that are out there. There’s great ideas (and amazing pictures that make the ideas look fun). However, it is definitely not an how-to book – it’s meant to be very basic explanations of most of the fetishes in existance. The pages aren’t regular pages – they feel like photo-print paper and generally feel very expensive.

If you’re not into BDSM, I wouldn’t fear – most of this book doesn’t even touch on BDSM. Some of the fetishes described are mostly applied in BDSM scenes, but a lot of it is stuff that can just be done on its own. It’s definitely not meant to be considered an extension of BDSM practices.

It does touch on lots of different fetishes. Some of them that included: S&M (and how to do it), dressing up, gender play, pony play, puppy training, bondage, foot worship, wax play, balloon fetish, cock and ball torture, and a general dictionary of all sorts of unique fetishes and their descriptions. It also has a nice little section about fetish art and where to find it.

This isn't your average book and the great pictures in the text prove that.

I would say this is a great start to anyone wishing to look into the world of fetishes. It’s mostly for someone interested in fetishes – not for someone seeking information. There’s pretty pictures to help you understand and understand why it’s sexual, but there’s very little to say about safety in much of the passages.

All-in-all, I wouldn’t say it’s an amazingly informative addition to your collection, but it’s definitely something should be there just for the thrill of owning and showing off such a pretty book. It’s nothing like the traditional book, and that’s part of the reason why I really did enjoy reading it. Plus, it’s a good reference book for when you forget what something is or want more detail on it.

If this book sounds like a good purchase to you, you can find it at the sex community Eden Fantasys. They also have some other good books you could check out. They also have some prettier pictures of the book at their adult toy store.

Book Review: Erotic Slavehood

Image from edenfantasys.com

I just finished my review of “Erotic Slavehood”. I’d definitely have to say that it’s one of my favorite introductory BDSM books. I’m looking forward to reviewing SM101 in the near future as well, along with “The Loving Dominant”. I must say that I’m addicted to reading.

I had a nice time of being able to curl up with my slave and do some of the activities with him. We had lots of discussion involved some of the prompts in the book about what slavery means to him. All-in-all, definitely a book I’d recommend to anyone. You can check out my full review here at Eden Fantasys.
